Blepharospasm and Botox

What is blepharospasm?

Blepharospasm is characterized by involuntary spasms of the muscles around the eye. In the early stages, there is increased blinking, irritation, and discomfort of the eyelids. As the spasms worsen, uncontrolled blinking, narrowing, and even closing of the eyelids occur.

How is blepharospasm treated?

Blepharospasm treatments include small injections of BOTOX just under the skin into the eyelid muscles responsible for the spasms. The spasms begin to decrease within 1-2 weeks and the effect lasts from 2-4 months. The treatments can be repeated and are covered by most medical insurance plans.

What is Cosmetic BOTOX?

BOTOX LogoCosmetic BOTOX is a simple, non-surgical treatment used to decrease the frown lines in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the corner of the eyelids.

The purified BOTOX protein is injected directly into the muscles that cause these wrinkles. It works by blocking the nerve signals to the muscle. A decrease in the frown lines occurs within 1 to 2 weeks. The results generally last from 2 to 4 months and the treatment can be repeated at that time. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Mild redness, swelling, or bruising are possible but not common after the treatment. There is no recovery period and patients return to their normal activities without restrictions immediately following BOTOX treatment. If you have been considering BOTOX, now is a great time to get rid of those unwanted frown lines.

The doctors at Bennett & Bloom Eye Centers are certified to perform both the treatments for blepharospasm and Cosmetic BOTOX.
